Overview

Younger teens work to the same syllabus as the older group, but the context is age appropriate and delivered in a fun and challenging way! They also work with Medusa Teen Theatre Company for part of the session (the final hour each Saturday). By working with their older ppers, they raise their own expectation level and standards of performance, and are memtored by the older students. They can also explore work and themes at a more mature level - helping younger members grow, and keeping more mature young teens pushed.

As part of the company, students work towards annual L.A.M.D.A exams, a UK qualification, in Acting, Devised Theatre and Musical Theatre. From 2016, they will also have the option of taking Silver Arts Awards. When they move up to the teen company at 14, there is the option of solo exams.

In 2013 - 16 100% of the students gained at Merit or Distinction in their LAMDA acting exams, and 100% of the group gained a Distinction in LAMDA musical theatre exams!

In depth

In 2017, the company will present a large version of 'Oliver!'  with their older peers in Medusa Teen Theatre Company.

* In drama, students will learn about famous play writers, film makers and stage craft. Confidence, improved articulation and mastering the basics of the technical aspect of acting and performing (such as stage terminology) are three of the aims we set ourselves for our younger actors.

* In music students work on a songs together, and begin to learn to sight read sheet music. They have a show choir, who perform in school concerts and at public events, as well as music within plays.

* For dance, fitness and agility are key, with through warm ups, a routine and the basic steps to build up to devising show dance. The dance is fun and even 'non dancers' will want to take part!

Winter and Summer terms conclude with a show, which will be produced by the group to be played in a mid scale theatre. Winter terms give tutors the chance to workshop on a variety of subjects, with special guests visiting (such as make up artists, song writers, vocal & dialect coaches), and for students to do final preparation for LAMDA acting and musical theatre exams in early December

Our shows are typically written for or adapted the cast, allowing everyone a speaking part, as well as a heavy amount of stage time. Performances are professionally produced in a mid scale theatre. Cast may have weekday evening rehearsals in the run up to a show (no more than two evenings), before a weekend of performances. Parents do not pay for costumes - only tickets to see the shows (min 2 per child required). We perform to the public, and have superb feedback and reviews for the shows - which look like a professional cast!

Performances coming up..

In 2017, students  will work on Oliver!, made popular by the film.  Rehearsals for this show will mean an extended day for all who choose to take a role - they will stay late and work with the teen casts. There is no extra charge for the extended rehearsals, which provide an extra 3-4 hours of training every week for a term.

Rehearsals are all on Saturdays during regular class times.

The Advanced are the upper/older group within the Artemis Junior Theatre Company. The whole Junior Company (upper and lower) are limited to 45 performers to ensure the highest levels of attention and quality of training. The course is taught by male and female staff to ensure balance and sufficient role-modeling.

11 is the minimum age to join the upper company (students will move up from the Intermediate level once they turn 11, unless they will have their 11th birthday within a term of joining). Students move up to Medusa after they turn 14, or just before if they turn 14 midway through a term. They do not have to move up at 14 - they can wait until 15 if preferred.

The Artemis Junior Theatre Company take the supporting roles in main shows, working with Medusa, our teen company. The Advanced group are expected to work at a teenage level and mentor younger cast.

A uniform of a school teeshirt, black jazz pants and black jazz shoes will be required.

In 2013 - 16 100% of the students gained at Merit or Distinction in their LAMDA acting exams, and 100% of the group gained a Distinction in LAMDA musical theatre exams!
